The use of composite plates has played a contributing role in the increasing use of metal structures in building projects .

The use of composite slabs in construction projects has increased in recent years and has contributed to the overall increase in the use of steel in civil engineering constructions. The benefits from the usage of composite decks can be summarized in the following:

  • Generally require shorter construction time.
  • The usage of wooden formwork is avoided.
  • The bridging of larger spans with corresponding reduction of metal transoms is achieved.

The main component of the composite decks is the profiled steel sheeting which during the construction phase, functions as formwork supporting the wet concrete. After the hardening of the concrete, the composite decks undertake the additional imposed loads. Usually, a light reinforcement is applied to the upper surface of the composite deck which protects the concrete from cracking. In the case that a continuous beam structural system is adopted, this reinforcement also gives to the composite deck the ability to undertake hogging bending moments at the positions of the supports.
